Been taking underwater pictures for over 30 years. Started playing with underwater digital  ~ 2012. Took an underwater digital photography class from Steve Zedekar at Seven Seas SCUBA here in Vancouver, Washington. Steve showed me the nuances of underwater digital and it was a game changer. Being able to view pictures and make adjustments underwater allows for experimenting that would have taken months of trial and error shooting film.

While my favorite underwater subjects are sharks off the east coast of Florida, an underwater fluorescence macro shot of a tube-dwelling anemone I captured at my favorite dive site in the pacific northwest, Sund Rock – Hoodsport, Washington, won first prize in the 2017 National Geographic Photographer of the Year contest, underwater category.

I was hoping to start a website once I retired to share my favorite shots with family, friends and anyone else interested. The NatGeo win has generated a lot of interest in my work and pushed the timeline forward. Fortunately, I’m blessed with a tech/social media savvy daughter, Diana Mitchell and she has worked wonders in an incredibly short period of time to get this site up and running.

If you have any questions about my work or photography I can be reached at jim@jimobester.com. Any other questions about the site or buying pictures contact Diana – Diana@jimobester.com.

Hope you enjoy my pictures.
